sweet comfort
in 1875 two americans, james henry and william campbell, were granted the first patent for the "water closet," or flush toilet. the first one-piece ceramic toilet was invented by fred adee early in the 20th century. sir thomas crapper, widely credited with inventing the toilet, did not. he was granted a british patent for the "silent valveless water waste preventer." think flush mechanism. and apparently he was never really a knight, although he did serve as a royal sanitary engineer (plumber), for which job he was flushed with pride. the earliest toilets, though, were apparently found in india 4500 years ago. now you know. o.c.
